English Units 1 & 2
This subject is the study of the English language via a number of different texts. These include the Australian novel “The Story of Tom Brennan”, the Shakespearean classic “Macbeth”, the novel “The Kite Runner” and the film “12 Years A Slave”. It may also include a live performance of “Macbeth” by the acting troupe from the ‘Page to Stage’ company.

Assessment
Your internal assessment is based on your performance in an oral presentation on a current issue in the media. Plus, a creative writing piece based on “The Story of Tom Brennan”, an analytical text response to “Macbeth” and an essay based on media article/s.
Previous Experience/Prerequisites
Successful completion of Year 10 English including a pass in both of the semester exams.
Future Pathways
English is the only compulsory subject in VCE. Successful completion of this subject is required to achieve your VCE certificate plus, to gain entry to most tertiary institutions.
English Units 3 & 4
The ability to communicate effectively is a key skill in all aspects of life. The study of English will help to develop these skills as well as instil in students an understanding and enjoyment of literature and an ability to critically analyse media texts.

- Presenting argument (Unit 4)
Assessment
A student’s internal assessment will be based upon a variety of essays, creative written tasks and oral presentations to demonstrate their understanding of the Areas of Study. As well as this, an end of year external examination will be undertaken.
Previous Experience/Prerequisites
English is a compulsory subject until Year 12. A student’s experience from Years 7 – 11 will be very important.
Future Pathways
A minimum study score for Year 12 English will be specified by most tertiary courses. It is imperative that students are aware of such requirements.
