Geography Unit 1 – Hazards and Disasters

In this unit students study different types of hazards, for example bushfires, infectious disease, earthquakes, storms, oil spills or plant and animal invasions, such as cane toad and blackberries in Australia. Students study people’s responses to these hazards and the impact of hazard events.

Areas of Study

Students examine two specific hazards to enable them to:

  • Describe and explain the nature of hazards and the impact of hazard events
  • Investigate human responses to hazard events
  • Examine the effectiveness of responses and the ability of government organisations and the community to develop prevention measures.

Assessment

Students are required to satisfactorily complete two outcomes. These are assessed through:

  • Fieldwork and the accompanying report
  • One of the following: Structured Questions, A Case Study, Report, Folio of Exercises

Previous Experience/Prerequisites

No previous experience is necessary but an interest in learning about the world is an advantage.

Geography Unit 2 – Tourism

In this unit students investigate the characteristics of tourism, its various forms, how it has changed and its impact on people and places. Students study examples from within Australia and the world.

Areas of Study

Students examine:

  • The changing nature of tourism
  • The location and distribution of different tourism destinations
  • Factors affecting the different types of tourism
  • The environmental, economic and social impacts of tourism
  • The range of management strategies in response to the impacts of tourism
  • The role of planning for sustainable tourism

Assessment

Students are required to satisfactorily complete two outcomes. These are assessed through:

  • Fieldwork and the accompanying report
  • One of the following: Structured Questions , A Case Study, Report, Folio of Exercises

Geography Unit 3 – Changing the Land

In this subject, students study changes to land cover, (Examples include forests, wetlands, glaciers) and land use. They study people’s responses to these changes and the impact of change.

Areas of Study

Students investigate:

  • Using fieldwork techniques, the processes and impacts of land use change at a local scale and reasons for changes.
  • Positive and negative impacts of the changes on the area’s social, economic and environmental characteristics and the influence of individuals, organisations and planning strategies.
  • Desertification, deforestation and melting glaciers at a global scale and global responses to the impact of these processes

Assessment

School assessed coursework for Unit 3 contributes 25% to the final study score. The assessment for this unit is:

  • Structured questions and fieldwork report
  • Analysis of geographic data

No previous experience is necessary, but an interest in maps and learning about the world is an advantage.

Geography Unit 4 – Human Population: Trends and Issues

In this subject, students study the patterns of population change and how governments, organisations and individuals have responded to these changes in different parts of the world.

Areas of Study

Students investigate:

  • Growth and decline in fertility and mortality, in particular the rapid population growth in selected countries
  • Forced and voluntary population movements
  • Issues, such as healthcare and social services needs, resulting from a rapidly growing population in one country and an ageing population in another country
  • Strategies developed to address these issues

Assessment

School assessed coursework for Unit 4 contributes 25% to the final study score. The assessment for this unit is:

  • Structured questions
  • Analysis of geographic data
  • External Exam contributes 50%

Previous Experience/Prerequisites

Unit 3 Geography is a prerequisite.
