General Mathematics Units 1 & 2
General Mathematics provides for different combinations of student interests and preparation for study of VCE Mathematics at Unit 3 and 4. In undertaking these units, students are expected to be able to apply techniques, routines and processes involving arithmetic, lists and tables, diagrams and geometric constructions, algebraic manipulation, equations and graphs with and without the use of technology.
Areas of Study
The area of study for General Mathematics Unit 1 and Unit 2 are:
- Algebra and structure
- Arithmetic and number
- Discrete mathematics
- Geometry, measurement and trigonometry
- Graphs and linear and non-linear relations
All assessments at Units 1 and 2 are school-based. The award of satisfactory completion for a unit is based on whether the student has demonstrated the set of outcomes specified for the unit. Demonstration of achievement of Outcomes will be based on:
- Summary or review notes
- Problem-solving tasks
- Effective and appropriate use of technology.
At least 50% on the year10 Mathematics exams at the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2.
This subject is particularly valuable for those considering a wide range of tertiary and TAFE courses from engineering, accounting, business to social sciences, education and nursing and many trades.
