VCAL Personal Development Skills

Personal Development Skills is an adult approach to learning and is designed to facilitate integrated and holistic learning where students partner with a range of community organisations to build and explore self-confidence, social responsibility and improved health and well-being.

Areas of Study

Through student lead projects, students explore, practise and refine skills and knowledge in:

  • Effective communication
  • Social Diversity
  • Self-evaluation and reflection for improvement
  • Problem-solving
  • Negotiation.
  • Leadership
  • Civics and Citizenship
  • Community and social issues
  • Health and well-being.
  • Student negotiated work.
  • Working with external partnerships.

Assessment

The project based learning experiences provide a context where this subject’s skills can be authentically assessed over the duration of the projects. Students are required to collect evidence for assessment and VCAA’s VCAL Quality Assurance process such as:

  • Active constructive contributions to community projects.
  • Self-evaluation/reflection for performance improvement.
  • Research and reporting.
  • Goal setting and timelines.
  • Communication logs and strategies.
  • Minutes of meetings.
  • Feedback from community partners.
  • Oral presentations.

Previous Experience/Prerequisites

It would be an advantage if students possessed good organisational skills, self-motivation and commitment to their pathways.
