Psychology Units 1 & 2

Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour through biological, psychological and social perspectives. Unit 1 focuses on the brain and psychological developments. Whereas, Unit 2 focuses on the influence of external factors on people. Students will apply key science skills through experimentation.

Areas of Study

  • How does the brain function?
  • What influences psychological development?
  • Conduct independent research investigations
  • What influences a person’s perspective of the world?
  • How are people influenced to behave in particular ways?
  • Conduct independent practical investigations

Assessment

Your internal assessment is based on your performance on student assessed coursework including tests, research scenarios, media analysis and student directed investigations. There is mid-year and end of year exam.

Previous Experience/Prerequisites

No previous experience is necessary but it is recommended that students receive a satisfactory result in year 10 Science. An interest in social sciences is also beneficial.

Future Pathways

This subject is particularly valuable for those considering tertiary study in psychology, social sciences, youth work/counselling, sport psychology and teaching.

Psychology Units 3 & 4

Unit 3 focuses on the function of the nervous system and how memory leads to learning. Unit 4 focuses on consciousness and mental health. Students will apply key science skills through experimentation.

  • How do people learn and remember?
  • How do levels of consciousness affect mental processes and behaviour?
  • What influences mental wellbeing?
  • Conduct independent practical investigations

Assessment

Your internal assessment is based on your performance on student assessed coursework including tests, research scenarios, media analysis and student directed investigations. There is an external examination at the end of the year.

Previous Experience/Prerequisites

No previous experience is necessary but having completed Psychology Unit 1 & 2 is beneficial.
