Learning

English

Our English curriculum at Pakenham Secondary College develops communication skills, critical thinking, and creativity, preparing students for success in all areas of life.

Through the study of English, students develop the skills to analyse, understand, communicate, and build meaningful connections with others and the world around them. At Pakenham Secondary College, we inspire students to uncover deeper meanings in literature while critically engaging with global issues. By exploring the world from multiple perspectives, students are encouraged to refine their self-expression through articulate written and spoken communication.

English is a core subject for all students from Years 7 to 12, with each year focusing on essential skills such as creative and persuasive writing, text analysis and comparison, vocabulary development, and effective communication techniques.

To enrich learning, we offer author visits for students in Years 7 to 10. These sessions spark a love of reading, provide insight into the writing process, and deepen students’ appreciation of literature. For VCE students, Ross Huggard, a seasoned Year 12 English assessor, conducts tailored seminars to prepare students for assessments. With his extensive experience in teaching and authoring educational texts, Mr. Huggard provides invaluable guidance to students in their final years of English study.

At the senior level, we offer Units 1–4 of VCE English for VCE students and Literacy classes for those undertaking the VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM). VCE VM Literacy equips students with practical reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills for effective communication in various contexts, preparing them for future success in the workplace, further education, and personal growth. Our VCE English curriculum is carefully designed to enhance confidence in advanced text analysis and sophisticated communication, ensuring students are well-prepared for the VCAA exams.

We also provide English Literature from Years 9 to 12. In Years 9 and 10, students can choose Literature as a semester-long elective, which lays the foundation for senior-level study. Literature enhances critical thinking, analytical skills, and creativity, while promoting a deeper understanding of different cultures, perspectives, and historical contexts.

At Pakenham Secondary College, our English curriculum equips students to excel academically, think critically, and communicate confidently, setting them up for success in every aspect of life.
