Mathematics
At Pakenham Secondary College, we believe mathematics shapes critical thinking and problem-solving, empowering students for success in academics and everyday life.
Mathematics equips students with essential knowledge and skills that are valuable in both personal and professional contexts. The curriculum provides a foundation for lifelong learning, supporting further study and research in mathematics as well as its application across various fields.
The Year 7 to 10 program aligns with the Victorian Curriculum and focuses on Statistics and Probability, Number and Algebra, and Measurement and Geometry. Students develop problem-solving strategies, data analysis skills, and organizational techniques. They receive regular feedback, particularly on test performance, which plays a key role in ongoing improvement.
We incorporate Number Talks in our classrooms, encouraging students to explore numbers in diverse ways, significantly enhancing their mathematical understanding. Progressive Achievement Testing (PAT) is used to assess learning progress and growth.
Each year, our Year 7 Enhancement Class participates in the Mathematical Association of Victoria’s Math’s Talent Quest, which promotes interest in mathematics through investigations and real-world applications. In 2024, two of our projects received recognition: The Cost of Saving Bees (Credit Certificate) and Running an AirBnB (Distinction), demonstrating how students connect financial mathematics, measurement, fractions, percentages, data, and real-life scenarios.
In VCE, students can choose from the following subjects:
-
VCE Foundation Mathematics
-
VCE General Mathematics
-
VCE Mathematical Methods
-
VCE Specialist Mathematics
Numeracy is a compulsory component of the VCE Vocational Major Certificate.
